2. What kind of printer/ink/paper do you use to print edible images?

We use a regular inkjet printer that’s used only for printing with edible papers and inks.

Our edible inks and edible paper, also called icing sheets, are made with FDA-approved ingredients.

3. What kinds of things can you print as an edible image?

Edible images are just like any other image you can print. The only difference is the type of ink and paper used.

We have hundreds of available images to choose from, covering everything from Disney to Marvel and all of your favorite sports teams from our partners at the PhotoCake® Library.Edible image of Elsa from Disney's Frozen on a cake.

4. What about custom images?

Absolutely!

Photos of your dog for custom treats? Your company logo? Old photos of mom and dad in funny looking clothes for an anniversary cake? Even selfies! These are just a few examples of custom edible images we can print. The possibilities are limitless!

  • Bring a high resolution JPG or a Microsoft Word document set to normal margins (1 inch) into the shop on a USB drive, or email your photo to us at questions@artisincakes.com.
  • Send us the highest quality image you have available. If the image is too small, it may look blurry or pixelated when printed. Our system supports high res JPGs or ready to print Word documents. Unfortunately, it does not support PDFs.
  • Alternatively, you can bring in a color copy and we can photocopy directly to an edible image sheet.
  • Tell us how you would like it sized. Is it going on a cake? What size cake?  Is it going on the side of your cake? How tall should it be?  Do you need us to scale it down to 2 inch circles for cookies? The page can print 12 circles. Put this info in the NOTES section during online ordering.
  • Edible image prints are 8" by 10.5" max printable area.
  • Transparencies on PNGs print as black, so we do not recommend using PNG files.Word documents print directly to edible paper and must be ready to print, so you'll want to duplicate, place, and scale your images just as you want them printed. Set your Word Document up as "Legal Size" with 1" side margins and 1.5" top and bottom margins.
  • Special Note: Our Version of Word does not include fancy scripts or other custom fonts unless you send us the font file for installation. If you have a particular font you want us to use, send the font file (in .ttf or .otf format) along with your image. Click here to learn how to locate the font files on your computer.
  • If you do not own the image(s) you want printed, they must be royalty free and not copyrighted or trademarked. We are not responsible for obtaining permission to use images for the creation of your custom edible image. We can not be held responsible for any breach or infringement of intellectual property rights, copyright, or trademark.

5. How long does it take to get my edible images after ordering?

If you're shopping with us in person, we can usually print your edible image while you wait!

We can also ship your edible images anywhere in the world!

Edible images are easy to peel away from their backing.

6. How do you place edible images on a cake or cookie?

Very carefully.

Seriously, they can be fragile. So be careful.

  1. If you're in a humid area, and the icing sheet seems to stick a little to the backing, first put your edible image (sealed up in the ziplock) in the freezer for about 10 minutes. This will encourage the sheet to harden up a little bit, making it easier to remove the backing.
  2. Need it cut to shape? While still attached to the backing, cut your image out of the icing sheet with an X-Acto blade, a knife, or a pair of scissors.
  3. Remove the edible image from the backing paper.
  4. After removing the backing paper, place your edible image onto your cake or cookie. If you see any bubbles or wrinkles, carefully smooth them out with an offset spatula or flat edged scraper.
